Umm well, you download a 'torrent' file which is like a roadmap. The torrent file contains info that your client program can use to collect all the necessary pieces of the file you want from connected peers who have that file. With the assistance of a type of server program called a 'tracker', the client finds, connects to, and downloads from those peers. It also uploads to peers who don't have the pieces that you do. It's like a lot of people all trying to complete copies of the same jigsaw puzzle all at the same time.
